I've becoming increasingly frustrated with Perl. Every time I start a new project, I face the same dilemma: If this project will need to talk HTTP, or parse XML, or maniplate URIs, then Perl is not the best choice, since it doesn't include modules to do this in its standard library. I find myself turning to python, ruby, or PHP quite often these days, since those languages don't have this deficiency.

I've known about GeoURL for a long time, but never actually took the time to register my site. Tonight, I finally did it, and took a few minutes to browse around my area, and there's a lot going on. The first thing I noticed was that there was a Plaze nearby, which I thought was weird... until I realized that I had discovered that plaze a few months ago (and added a few photos, too).

Over the last year or so, I've spent a lot of time looking for a decent web-based RSS aggregator. I started with Bloglines, and stayed there for many, many moons (about 16 months, actually), but was ultimately unsatisfied. I used Rojo for a few weeks, but there were too many problems (slowness, and a few bugs), and then I remembered that NewsGator had an online version of it's reader. I was a little hesitant to try NewsGator (I'm biased against companies that build Windows software, unfortunately, and NewsGator's non-web product is an Outlook plugin), but after giving it a try, I must say that I am favorably impressed.

I started using GnuPG extensively in February 2003, and since March 2003 I've been signing almost every piece of email that I send out. One of the reasons it took me so long to get started using cryptography is because I had a hard time finding good explanations of how to do common things, like encrypt files or verify detached signatures on tarballs. So I decided that once I got comfortable using GnuPG, I would start a collection of scribblings explaining how to do things, as I learned how to do them. I'm now going to start making good on that decision.

I had a need for a simple script to do HTML-encoding from the command line, so I wrote this simple Perl script. It relies on Gisle Aas' HTML::Entities module, which many Perl installations will already have (it's a prerequisite for almost every application that does HTML encoding or URI handling).

Like many people who spend who use AIM, I've spent a lot of time perfecting my buddy list. It seemed a shame that this effort should go to waste, so I started trying to think of what else I could use this data for. It occured to me that this list represents a good chunk of the people with whom I communicate every day, i.e., friends and acquaintances, which sounds a lot like what FOAF is all about. I use Gaim as my IM client of choice, and so I started poking around in my ~/.gaim directory for interesting files. I found one: blist.xml, which appears to be an XML version of my buddy list. With a little work, some XSL, and a few assumptions, I found that I could generate FOAF fragments from this buddy list fairly easily.

Apache began as a series of patches the NCSA's httpd. After httpd's lead developer left NCSA and active development of httpd began to stagnate, programmers from around the world found they needed a central repository to maintain the body of code and patches that had accumulated. A group of these webmasters banded together, and, with machines and bandwidth donated by HotWired, set up an informal coalition to direct the the development of this new server. Dubbed Apache ("a patchy server"), it quickly became the most popular server on the Net after it's birth in April 1995, at version 0.6.5.
